Your colon, or large intestine, exists between your small intestine and anus. Sometimes, conditions cause inflammation or damage to the colon.
When conservative treatment has failed, patients with certain conditions may need colon surgery. These conditions may include:
- Colon cancer
- Intestinal blockages
- Crohn’s disease
- History of harmful polyps
During colon surgery, varying parts of the colon may be removed. The remaining colon is reattached to the small intestine and anus.
Colon surgery can be done using traditional or minimally invasive technique. Your surgeon will discuss which type of surgery is best for you.
