When the muscle wall becomes weak, the intestines or other tissue may push through the muscles. This is called a hernia. Types of hernias include:
- Inguinal hernia- tissue or intestines pushes through a weak spot in the groin.
- Umbilical hernia- tissue pushes through a weak spot near the belly button.
- Incisional hernia- tissue pushes through a healing scar.
- Hiatal hernia- stomach pushes up through the diaphragm near the esophagus.
You may notice a protrusion in the skin where the hernia is. You may not have any pain or discomfort with a hernia, however, we recommend having it checked by a surgeon the moment you notice it. If the hernia becomes painful you need to have it checked right away.
Hernia surgery can be done through minimally invasive or through traditional open surgery.
